Chapter 4: Industry Qualifications

This week we are again reading Freberg's Social Media for Strategic Communication, this weeks chapter is all about the roles a social media professional can take and also the qualifications they might need in the real world.  This chapter goes over everything from how to effectively analyse a company or person, their social media presence to up your chances of landing a job, to how much a social media professional can expect to make. So quite a bit of information, and it all starts off with Sam's story about how she made it in the social media world. Sam is a Western Kentucky Alum who is a "Hilltopper fan for life", she got her a bachelors of fine arts there and later finished her masters at the University of Louisville. She writes about how she got landed to incredible jobs one as the audience engagement editor for the United States Olympic team, and then later in her life she landed her dream job as the brand manager for the volleyball division of Adidas. She's

Spring Weather is on its Way!

Earlier this month when Phil the groundhog emerged from his winter hidey hole and did not scare himself with his shadow, it gave me hope that warmer weather would quickly upon us. With how impatient I can be and my hopes for weather to break being at an all time high I have been less than excited with the recent weather we've been having here in Ada. none the less my excitement for warmer weather and time spent outdoors with friends will continue until it happens. Spring in Ada is an interesting thing, and it is likely similar on all college campuses, in the colder months its as if all of the students become recluses and spend all if not the majority of their time inside. Which honestly I can't say I blame them and actually I do the same exact thing. The frigid winters here in Ada are like nothing I have ever experienced before which likely doesn't mean a whole lot coming from a Texas boy but folks up here hate the cold just as much as we do down south, but the slow shift

Symphony Live tweet

Earlier today Max Weese and I had the opportunity to attend the Ohio Northern Symphony: "Multiculturalism in the New World" and live tweeted the whole event. We both had an excellent time listening to some great music played by some very talented musicians. It was the first symphony I have ever attended and likely will not be my last. I invite you to go check out my twitter account , you can find all of my tweets from this even by searching SMspring19 and also onusymph2019.
This week our reading for class is chapter two and three of Social Media for Strategic Communication. Chapter two is all about the fundamental legal and ethical concepts pertaining to social media, and chapter three is all about building a brand weather that be a personal brand or building the brand for a company. In this book each chapter is started with the accounts of a real story or experience that showcases the message and subject of the chapter.  In this chapter Chris Yandle the communications specialist for the parish public schools recalls how he got into the social media business an unexpected landing spot for him however it has worked out very well for him. The rest of the chapter goes into social media ethics the deadly sins of social media, which are misappropriation, abandonment, manipulation, ignorance, monotony, narcissism, uniformity, as well as bullying, not giving proper credit, sharing too much, flame war, automation, and going rogue. Which was h

Easiest Shrimp Tacos Around

With school and lacrosse it can sometimes be difficult to come home after a long day and muster up the energy to cook a good meal for yourself. you'll find yourself eating bowl after bowl of ramen noodles or countless peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. But lucky for y'all my girlfriend Morgan found a super easy shrimp taco recipe that anyone can make and it takes just a few minutes to prepare. This recipe will make about three or four tacos and the ingredients you'll need are as followed. The Shrimp: 1/2 pound deveined and peeled medium shrimp panko break crumbs  Cooking oil of your choice (we used vegetable oil) 2 eggs whisked flour The Slaw: 1/2 cup shredded green cabbage 1/2 cup shredded red cabbage 1 1/2 tablespoons mayo The juice of 1 lime 1/4 teaspoon salt Pinch of pepper 1 Tablespoon chopped cilantro Cooking instructions: to fry the shrimp you want to get a frying pan large enough to fry a good amount of shrimp at once and deep enough so your oil

Reddit on the Rise

Image
Reported last week by several news entities the popular website Reddit has almost doubled in value since 2017, as it now is being valued at 3 billion dollars now rivaling Google and Facebook. In an article I read published on the 11th of February by CNBC and written by Julia Boorstin Reddit is on the up and up and is ready to make waves. For those of you that don’t know much about Reddit, Wikipedia defines it as an   “american news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website”, or more easily defined as a website that is comprised of forums about anything and everything. Reddit has recently grown as it is being used more and more as advertisement space. With how the platform is set up any and all people can post just about whatever they please. Effectively offering people and companies free advertisement. Most recently big names like Toyota , Jordan Peele of Key and Peele and Producer of movies like Get Out and Us, as well as Charles Schwab all have turned t

Social Media for Strategic Communication Chapter one

Image
Chapter one of Social Media for Strategic Communication Karen Freburg’s new book is all about the ethical and legal fundamentals of social media, she covers things like the deadly sins of social media, she gives examples of branding mishaps of the past, and touches on a bunch of social media policies. Karen starts the book off by explaining how she got her start in social media and how it was not what she had imagined herself doing if she would have been asked ten years ago however it has worked out in her favor and she very much enjoys it. Once she’s done with all of her introduction she begins to discuss how it is one important to understand the platforms you’re using but two it is also very important to understand that there are legal and ethical implications to everything you think, say, like, comment and post on social media. Karen puts a big emphasis on this and i think it’s a good thing that she does. I think that folks use social media as something to hide behind and often

A Thumbs Up for Thumbs Down

The idea of a dislike button has been around as long as Facebook has been around, and folks have also been asking for one for the same amount of time. However this movement is now gaining some traction. With the growth of of social media there will undoubtedly be comments and posts that aren’t welcome. As individuals we can comment and report but other than that it is up to the platform to police these posts. However with a dislike button or a thumbs down like what YouTube utilizes could be a game changer. However with great power comes great responsibility, the dislike button could be a very threatening and aggressive aspect of the social media platform and i think that is probably the hold up with the addition of this feature to all of the platforms.   The main issue with the addition of a dislike or down vote feature to any and all platforms that don’t already have the feature in my eyes at least is that the feature offers a pathway for bullying and hate. While those obviou

My Last Ride has Begun

My last ride has begun, this past Saturday marks the first big milestone of my senior lacrosse season here at Ohio Northern. We played two games, the first game was against the big red of Denison university the team that was ranked number nine in the preseason rankings. The second game was against the colonels of Center college. The weather was fairly mild for this time of year in Ohio, it was a chilly twenty three degrees but it was clear and very sunny which made for a decent on field temperature and for what would turn out to be two very competitive games with some fierce competition. This year there are a few rule changes that greatly affect the play of the game the most impact being the new eighty second shot clock that has been implemented this year. This new rule changes a few different aspects of the game. The most obvious effect this rule change has on the game is that it forces teams to create offense in a much quicker manner, teams can no longer hold the ball for extended

The Art of Social Media chapter 11 and 12

This week we continue reading Guy Kawasaki's book The Art of Social Media. I read the last two chapters this week chapter eleven titled How to Optimize for Individual Platforms and chapter twelve How to Put Everything Together. As you might think chapter eleven offers insights on how to best use different types of social media platforms as none of them are the same and can be used in different ways, and chapter twelve is somewhat of a recap of the book and strings all the chapters together in an attempt to show that everything you learn in this book being used correctly will garner a very effective social media presence. Chapter 11 offered a lot of good information, it offered information on how to effectively use the big five social media platforms Facebook, twitter, Instagram, google plus and linked in and also slide share. What I thought the most interesting tip for optimizing Facebook is to experiment with it, Facebook has been around for what feels like ages and I would have

The Worst Super Bowl Ever?

What is likely to go down as the worst Superbowl of all time, last night the Los Angeles Rams faced off against the New England patriots in the “world championship” football game better known as the super bowl. With over under lines set near sixty total points it’s safe to say that most people thought this game was going to be a high scoring event showcasing two great offenses as well as two great offensive coaches in Sean Mcvay and Bill Belichick . However that was far from what ended up happening. What millions of people watched unfold was almost the polar opposite of what the professionals predicted. A games that started with arguably the best quarterback to ever play the game throwing an interception on his first passing attempt, and the rams accumulating just 57 yards by halftime and no points. I like many others was wondering why I was still watching this horribly slow football game, rather than changing the channel it was the possibility of FOMO that kept my eyes along with
This week Max Weese and I had the pleasure of interviewing Ohio Northern Men's Lacrosse Head Coach Nat St. Laurent and assistant Coach Chris Rossie , They tag team the social media for the team. Coach St. runs the Twitter and Coach Rossie runs the Instagram, they each offered interesting perspectives on how they utilize different platforms and their opinions on them.
