Reddit on the Rise

Reported last week by several news entities the popular website Reddit has almost doubled in value since
2017, as it now is being valued at 3 billion dollars now rivaling Google and Facebook. In an article I read
published on the 11th of February by CNBC and written by Julia Boorstin Reddit is on the up and up and
is ready to make waves. For those of you that don’t know much about Reddit, Wikipedia defines it as an
“american news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website”, or more easily defined as a
website that is comprised of forums about anything and everything.
Image result for Reddit logoReddit has recently grown as it is being used more and more as advertisement space. With how the platform
is set up any and all people can post just about whatever they please. Effectively offering people and
companies free advertisement. Most recently big names like Toyota, Jordan Peele of Key and Peele and
Producer of movies like Get Out and Us, as well as Charles Schwab all have turned to Reddit as a means
of advertisement and man has it worked. The success of these ad campaigns has not gone unnoticed,
actually the success of ad campaigns like these are largely the thank for the rapid growth of the website.

While getting investors from international investors Reddit plans to expand to grow its add platform crossing borders and oceans to compete with google and Facebook. The push to go global is largely forced by the large investments from chinese investment giant Tencent who invested 150 million dollars joining many other investors in boosting Reddit to its valuation of 3 billion dollars. However it’s not all sunshine and rainbows for Reddit. Since Reddit was founded in 2005 there have been serious concerns over privacy, abuse and harassment on their website. Lucky for us Reddit CEO Steve Huffman was recently interviewed and can be quoted saying “the company has invested in better technology to catch abuse and better tools for users to report abuse”.
