Chapter 7: Strategic Writing for Social Media

Like every other chapter in Social Media for Strategic Communication this chapter starts out by spotlighting a professional in the field. This week Jaryd Wilson, he works for the Atlanta Hawks an NBA franchise in you guessed it Atlanta. He works with their social media and has known he wanted to work in journalism since he was in high school.  Jaryd Went to The University of Missouri for his degree and quickly got a job at a fox affiliate on Colorado springs after college. He continues to go on to talk about how Jaryd and the other social media folks at the hawks use emojis to communicate with their fans as well as the importance of good grammar and how they communicate best with their fans. Chapter seven is titled Strategic Writing for Social Media and the different topics covered in this chapter are content curation V.S. content creation, understanding tone V.S understanding voice, and lastly the best practices for social media writing. content curation V.S. content creation, con

The Plastic Problem

Image
If you pay any attention at all to the media and or social media you'll know that there has recently been a push to do away with single use plastics like straws, single use water bottles, those plastic rings that keep 6 packs of sodas together and many more. Well it isn't just your nature loving roommate that is seeing the issue and talking about it. Corona, yes the Corona that makes beer is very aware of the situation and is doing something to grow awareness about the issue. Corona built a wall out of single use plastics that had been collected from famous Impanema Beach in Rio de Janiero Brazil in front of one of the most popular entrances to the beach.  The picture above shows the roughly six foot high 45 foot long wall made of plastic with the sign out front that roughly translates to English as "one day, the trash left on the beach will stop you from getting into it". I know that this very well could just be a PR stunt by Corona to get some good press or ma

A Record Breaking Weekend

This past weekend marked the start of OAC play for the Ohio Northern Men’s Lacrosse team, this year we opened conference play against the Wilmington Quakers. Wilmington came into the game with a record of 1-4 while the polar bears entered the game with 7-1 record. The polar bears started the game off very quickly with racking up ten goals in the first quarter of the game and quickly made it obvious that the polar bears meant business. Saturday’s game was a historic game for the polar bears as they broke a number of school records during the game as well as many benchmarks for individual players. One of the many records broken on was the team scoring record, the final score of the games was   26-2 both the highest scoring game in Ohio Northern Men’s Lacrosse history and the greatest margin of victory in the short history of the program. These records broke the previous of 25 total points and a 22 point margin of victory set last season in a 25-3 victory over Calvin College. Another

Chapter 6: Strategic Planning For Social Media

Like every other chapter this chapter starts off with the story and a small interview of a social media professional. This chapter spotlights the Clemson University Associate Director of Creative Media Jeffrey Kallin. He talks about his start in social media and how it probably is not exactly where he thought he might be when he was in college, his degree is actually in parks, and tourism management. But I am certain that Jefferey is beyond happy where his life has taken him as he talks about how much he loves his job and how much his teams mean to him you can tell that Jeffery loves what he does and loves the people he does it with. Chapter six is all about strategic planning in social media, the chapter goes in depth on what strategic management is and the different components of strategic management. The different components are background information, brand voice, vision and mission, environmental scan analysis, client or company in focus, social media communication audit, situa

Boeing, Winged but Still Flying

Y'all have likely heard about the recent news pertaining to Boeing and their new 737 max airplanes with two separate planes going down in the recent history. With countries around the globe grounding all Boeing 787 Max planes as well as companies like Southwest Airlines are following closely behind. With these controversial times coming over Boeing it will be interesting to see how they handle this situation and the impact it will have on the company. With the incidents happening just days ago the president of Boeing has already issued a statement about their company morals what they hold near and dear to their hearts and how they do and are taking these incidents very seriously. They have pledged to get to the bottom of what happened and are working hard with experts on the ground trying to fix the issues and ensure that these issues do not happen again. Another promise made was that Boeing was/ is doing whatever they can do to quickly create new software for their 737 Max pla

Sweet Sweet Victory

Both a song featured as Spongebob's go to Superbowl halftime show song and a saying many of my teammates as well as I uttered after Saturdays overtime win against the Alfred University Saxons. A very chilly Saturday in western New York saw the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern face off against the Saxons of Alfred University , a game that both teams were very excited for as their last meeting was seen by many as controversial, more than one person wrote the game off as a fluke claiming we "snuck up on them". This time around both teams were ready to set the record straight and prove that it either was or wasn't a fluke. The game started with the polar bears going on an unanswered four goal run, taking a 4-0 Ohio Northern lead into the second quarter. for many it looked like this game was well within the hands of the polar bears, and with the polar bears continuing the trend netting a fifth goal early in the second quarter to put the bears up 5-0. But the Saxons weren'

My Last Spring Break

With spring break roughly marking the half way point of the semester is just another benchmark making me realize that my time here at Ohio Northern University is quickly coming to a close, However spring break is not just a marker to show how much time is left in the semester. For the Lacrosse team here spring break is always a business trip.  In the three previous years of the Ohio Northern Men's Lacrosse team we have never won all three games on our spring break trip, we had always dropped at least one game. This year though all that changed, this year we accomplished what we had never done before.  This year we first face a Guilford College team that we have met with once before and are somewhat familiar with. A tough, gritty team with a reputation of being a little chippy and physical. The second team we competed with was Pfieffer University a team that has previously been competing at the division two level which is interesting and brought up some questions. Last we playe
